Alka Jain: The Woman Who Began Again at 60
At 60, when many believe life should become quieter, Alka Jain chose to make hers more exciting.
For Alka, stepping onto a pageant stage at the age of 60 was never simply about wearing a crown or walking a ramp. It was about discovering a new side of herself after spending decades devoted to her family, social work and responsibilities. Participating in Mrs. India for the first time-and going on to win the title of Mrs. India Fascinating-became the beginning of a chapter she had never imagined writing.

“I am 60, but I still feel 21 at heart,” she says, capturing the spirit that defines her journey.
For many years, Alka’s world revolved around her family. Married at a young age, she devoted herself to her home, children and loved ones while also contributing to society through social work. Being a wife, mother and daughter-in-law came naturally to her, but somewhere within her was a quiet desire to explore what more she could do.
That opportunity arrived with Mrs. India.
Instead of questioning whether she was too old to begin something new, Alka asked herself a much simpler question: Why not?
She decided to step forward, challenge herself and discover her own potential. More importantly, she wanted her journey to become a message for women who had spent years putting their families first.
Her decision was not about leaving her responsibilities behind. It was about finally making space for herself within a life she had spent building for others.
Stepping Beyond Familiar Roles
The biggest challenge was not the ramp, the competition or the preparation. It was stepping outside an identity she had lived with for decades.
For years, Alka had been accustomed to taking care of everyone around her. Doing something purely for herself felt unfamiliar. Coming from a conservative family after marriage, she had also experienced the challenge of adjusting to a completely different environment while finding a balance between her upbringing and her new family.
Yet, through every stage of life, she held on to her confidence.
She believed there was always more she could learn, experience and accomplish.
The pageant presented an entirely new world. Alka had never walked on a ramp before. Suddenly, she had to work on her fitness, confidence, presentation and personality while preparing herself for an experience unlike anything she had done previously.
There were moments of nervousness and uncertainty, but she refused to let her age define what she could or could not do.
Her mindset remained simple: “I can do it.”
And she kept moving.
The Woman Who Never Stopped Exploring
Alka’s confidence did not begin with the pageant. It had been shaped through years of staying active and taking on experiences that pushed her beyond the ordinary.
She enjoys Zumba, painting and gardening, among other activities. But one of her most remarkable experiences came when she decided to undertake the Roopkund Trek, reaching an altitude of around 16,500 feet.
The remarkable part was that she had never trekked before.
She completed the trek in one go.
That experience became more than a personal accomplishment. It reinforced a belief she would later carry into her pageant journey-that determination can take a person much further than they initially imagine.
The same attitude helped her approach Mrs. India. Rather than allowing unfamiliarity to intimidate her, she treated every new challenge as an opportunity to learn.
And this time, her journey ended with a crown.
More Than a Crown
Winning the title of Mrs. India Fascinating at 60 became one of the defining achievements of Alka’s life. But she sees the meaning of the achievement beyond the title itself.
For her, the real victory was having the courage to begin.
She could have continued with the familiar routine she had followed for years. Instead, she chose to give herself a chance.
Her family played an important role in that decision. Their encouragement gave her the confidence to pursue something completely new and reminded her that pursuing her own dreams did not diminish the love she had for them.
In fact, her family remains one of her greatest sources of pride. Seeing her two sons and two daughters-in-law settled and happy gives her immense joy.
But alongside her role as a mother and family member stands another important part of her identity-her commitment to society.
A Life of Giving Back
Social work has been an important part of Alka’s life for years.
She has been associated with organisations and groups including Jain Social Group, Vaishali Jain Yuva Parishad, Sangini and an International Women Empowerment Group, taking on responsibilities such as President, Executive Member and Secretary.
Through these associations, she has participated in initiatives supporting women, children, underprivileged people and others in need.
Her social work reflects another dimension of her personality: while she wanted to discover more for herself, she also wanted to continue contributing to the lives of others.
Today, she hopes her journey can particularly encourage women who have spent years caring for their families.
Her message is simple-family responsibilities and personal dreams do not have to exist at opposite ends of life.
There can still be a dream waiting to be explored.
A Message to Women: It Is Never Too Late
Alka Jain’s story is ultimately not about age.
It is about the decision to begin.
At 60, she entered a field she had never explored before. She stood on a ramp for the first time, worked on her fitness and personality, faced unfamiliar challenges and ultimately earned a title that became a proud milestone in her journey.
Now, she wants to use that experience to inspire other women to give themselves permission to dream.
Her future plans reflect the same spirit. She wants to continue her social work, particularly initiatives connected with women, children, underprivileged communities and animals. She also wants to remain active, keep learning, travel, explore new experiences and continue challenging herself.
For Alka, turning 60 did not signal the closing of a chapter.
It opened one.
“I am 60, but I feel this is a new beginning for me, not the end.”
Perhaps that is the most powerful lesson in her journey: sometimes, the most exciting chapter of life begins when you finally decide to write one for yourself.
