From ₹500 to a Global Cricket Brand: The Inspiring Journey of ZAP Cricket Founder Bhavya Bharadwaj
When most engineering students were preparing for campus placements, Bhavya Bharadwaj was building something entirely different—a cricket brand that would one day be recognised across the world.
For many engineering graduates, the traditional route of securing a stable job feels like the obvious choice. But for Bhavya Bharadwaj, that path never sparked excitement. As placement opportunities approached, he realised he wanted to create opportunities rather than simply accept one. That decision marked the beginning of an entrepreneurial journey powered by determination, calculated risks, and an unwavering belief in his vision.
With just ₹500 in his pocket, Bhavya launched ZAP Cricket during his second year of engineering. Coming from a middle-class family with no entrepreneurial background, he had no financial backing, no established business network, and no roadmap to follow. What he did have was the courage to start.

In the early days, Bhavya managed everything on his own. While balancing engineering studies, he spent long hours learning the fundamentals of business, sourcing products, handling customers, and exploring online marketplaces. His routine often stretched to 18-hour workdays, and attending classes frequently became secondary to building his dream.
ZAP Cricket initially began as a small trading venture. Bhavya experimented with selling different products online, hoping to discover a sustainable business model. The journey involved continuous trial and error before he found his niche in cricket equipment, particularly bats.
However, identifying the right product was only the beginning.
Selling third-party products offered little room for growth, prompting Bhavya to make a bold decision—he would create his own brand. Thus, ZAP Cricket was born. Building a brand from scratch came with fresh challenges. Early attempts to scale through online platforms, including Amazon, failed to deliver the expected results. Orders were inconsistent, growth was slow, and setbacks became part of the daily routine.
Instead of allowing failure to define his future, Bhavya treated every obstacle as a lesson. He refined his business model, strengthened product quality, and gradually transformed ZAP Cricket from a trading operation into a full-fledged manufacturing company producing high-quality cricket bats.
As the brand earned trust within the cricketing community, opportunities that once seemed impossible began to arrive. ZAP Cricket started manufacturing bats for internationally recognised brands, including Puma, while also attracting prestigious clients such as the King of Udaipur.
One of the defining milestones in the company's journey came when ZAP Cricket became the first Indian cricket equipment brand to sponsor the Nepal national cricket team. The partnership proved significant, as Nepal qualified for major international tournaments, including the Asia Cup and the ICC Cricket World Cup.
The sponsorship also gave global visibility to the brand. Nepalese cricketers carried ZAP bats onto international grounds, and one memorable moment came when Sompal Kami struck sixes off Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya using a ZAP bat, placing the brand in front of cricket fans around the world.
Behind these achievements lay years of persistence and personal sacrifice. Bhavya constantly faced questions about choosing entrepreneurship over the security of a conventional career. Family expectations, financial uncertainty, business losses, and discouraging opinions tested his commitment on multiple occasions. Yet he remained focused on building something meaningful rather than chasing short-term comfort.
Today, ZAP Cricket has evolved into a globally recognised cricket equipment brand with a growing international footprint. Proudly manufacturing Made-in-India cricket bats, the company exports to countries including Nepal, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom, while serving players, cricket academies, and cricket boards across numerous cricket-playing nations.
Bhavya Bharadwaj's story demonstrates that successful businesses are not always built with substantial investments—they are built with conviction, persistence, and the willingness to keep moving forward despite uncertainty. What began as a ₹500 college experiment has grown into an international brand, proving that a bold idea, backed by relentless effort, can create an impact far beyond its humble beginnings.
