Chandrika Y Lama: The Woman Who Turned Compassion Into a Lifeline for Street Animals

Some journeys begin with a dream. Others begin with compassion.

For Chandrika Y Lama, it all started with a simple act of kindness—feeding hungry street animals. What began as a small gesture soon turned into a life mission: rescuing the sick, the injured, and the forgotten animals who had no one else to care for them.

An ardent animal lover at heart, Chandrika slowly moved from feeding stray animals to actively rescuing those in need of medical attention. Today, her home is a sanctuary where 28 rescued animals live under her care. But her work does not stop there. Every morning, she walks nearly 9 kilometers, feeding community animals along the way—ensuring that many more strays do not go to sleep hungry.

Life has taken her across the country. Being married to a serving officer in the Indian Army, Chandrika has experienced the constant movement that comes with a transferable military life. Yet, wherever she goes, her rescued companions travel with her. Across cities and highways of India, her journey has always included the animals she saved.

Her work, however, comes with immense challenges.

Chandrika has been funding her rescue and feeding work entirely through her personal savings and resources. Over time, most of her savings have been spent on food, medical treatment, and rescue operations. Today, financial limitations have made it increasingly difficult for her to continue rescuing animals at the scale she once did.

But if there is one thing Chandrika says animals have taught her, it is patience. Their silent endurance has shaped her outlook on life. No matter how difficult the circumstances become, she chooses to remain positive and continue doing what she can for them.

Her dedication has not gone unnoticed.

In 2019, she was crowned Winner of Indie Royal Mrs India Classic, a recognition that highlighted both her grace and her purpose. Later, her humanitarian work for animals was acknowledged when she was honored with the Best Social Worker Award in 2025. Her inspiring efforts were also featured by The Better India in 2024, bringing national attention to the impact she has created at the grassroots level.

Yet for Chandrika, these recognitions are not the destination.

Her dream is far bigger.

She hopes to establish a large animal rescue center where sick and injured animals can receive proper treatment and care. A place where no animal dies simply because help arrived too late.

Alongside rescue work, Chandrika is already working toward another crucial mission—making communities rabies-free. Through her Anti-Rabies Vaccination Drive, she has successfully vaccinated over 300 street animals, taking an important step toward protecting both animals and people.

For Chandrika Y Lama, compassion is not a moment—it is a lifelong commitment.

Every rescued life, every vaccinated animal, and every morning walk filled with feeding bowls brings her one step closer to a world where kindness extends beyond humans… and where even the voiceless are heard.
