Dr. Abhilasha J. Lal: A Woman of Substance Balancing Leadership, Motherhood and Purpose
There are moments in life when strength is no longer a choice but a necessity. For Dr. (Mrs.) Abhilasha J. Lal, surviving two critical phases of COVID-19, including a life-threatening period while expecting her fourth child, became one of the most defining experiences of her journey.
Yet, her story is not simply about overcoming difficult circumstances. It is about the life she has continued to build beyond them.
Dr. (Mrs.) Abhilasha J. Lal’s journey is a reflection of determination, faith and a deep sense of responsibility. Guided by the philosophy of “simple living and high thinking,” she has built a life that brings together professional excellence, family values and a commitment to social service.
As a senior administrator at Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences (SHUATS), Prayagraj, she has taken on significant leadership responsibilities while raising four children. Her story is particularly remarkable for the personal challenges she has faced, including surviving two critical phases of COVID-19, one of them during a life-threatening period while she was expecting her fourth child.
These experiences strengthened her commitment to living with gratitude and purpose. For her, professional success is meaningful when it is accompanied by compassion, service and the ability to make a difference in the lives of others.
A Career Built on Leadership and Service
Currently serving as Director of Human Resource Management and Relations (HRMR) and Director of Campus Ministry at SHUATS, Dr. Lal plays an important role in institutional development, employee relations and the wider university community.
Her professional journey has included several leadership positions, including Joint Director of HRMR at SHUATS, Associate Director of Schools at Sam Higginbottom Educational and Charitable Society (SHECS), and Manager of Ethel Higginbottom School and College.
Her academic and professional background extends beyond India. She has worked as a Bioproduct Designer at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Netherlands, where she received the NUFFIC DELTA Scholarship and a faculty scholarship for higher studies.
With a PhD in Business Studies (Human Resource Management) and an Engineering Doctorate in Product Design, she brings together academic knowledge, international exposure and practical leadership experience.
For Dr. Lal, leadership is not simply about holding a position. It is about creating an environment where people can develop their abilities, contribute meaningfully and find opportunities to grow.
The Honour of Being a Woman of Substance
Receiving the Woman of Substance honour for 2025–26 from Rotary Club Midtown was a significant moment in Dr. Lal’s journey. Yet, she views the recognition as more than an award.
“I feel deeply blessed and humbled to have received the Woman of Substance honour. This recognition is not just an award; it is a reminder of the purpose that God has instilled within me.”
She believes that women can fulfil multiple roles without making recognition the sole purpose of their efforts. To her, being a woman of substance means living with integrity, strong moral values and the courage to overcome challenges.
She finds immense joy in serving people with compassion, while recognising that every achievement brings with it a greater responsibility towards society.
Her belief in service has been reflected throughout her life. In 1998, she received the Governor’s Award, followed by the President’s Award in 2000 as a Bharat Scouts and Guides member for her contributions to social service.
She has also been recognised for her philanthropic work and invited to participate as a panelist, judge, chief guest and guest of honour at various events.
In 2025, she was honoured with the title of Mrs. India Inspirational Queen at the Mrs. India Pageant by Deepali Phadnis, held in Jaipur. The recognition added another dimension to a journey already defined by professional achievements and a commitment to society.
Women Leaders and the Future of Education
Dr. Lal believes that women leaders have an increasingly important role in shaping the future of education. Their experiences, particularly the challenges they may have faced in pursuing education themselves, can help them understand its value and the barriers that continue to prevent many girls from accessing it.
“Education empowers and creates opportunities. It is not just a personal asset; it is a catalyst for national development.”
She sees women leaders as educators who also have the ability to influence institutional culture, encourage young people and create opportunities for future generations.
For her, education is one of the most effective ways to bring about meaningful social change. She deeply respects women who continue to work towards this goal and considers herself fortunate to be part of the process.
Her own career reflects this belief. Through her responsibilities in human resource management, education and campus ministry, she works to create an environment where individuals can learn, develop and contribute to the wider community.
Motherhood, Ambition and the Meaning of Balance
One of the most defining aspects of Dr. Lal’s life is her ability to balance demanding professional responsibilities with motherhood.
As a mother of four, she understands that family life brings its own responsibilities, sacrifices and moments of uncertainty. Her experiences have shaped her belief that marriage and motherhood need not stand in the way of a woman’s ambitions.
Instead, she sees them as meaningful parts of a life that can continue to grow in different directions.
Her journey through serious health challenges, including the difficult period during her fourth pregnancy, has reinforced her belief in faith, gratitude and perseverance.
She hopes her experience will encourage women who are struggling to balance their careers with family responsibilities. Her message is simple: women should not have to abandon their aspirations because they have other important roles to fulfil.
Poetry, Faith and a Deeper Connection with Society
Beyond her administrative responsibilities, Dr. Lal has a strong interest in cultural and sporting activities, through which she has earned several accolades.
In 2021, she began writing poetry, using it as a medium to express spiritual reflections and thoughts on social issues.
Her writing reflects the values that guide her life: faith, compassion, gratitude and a desire to understand the world around her.
For Dr. Lal, poetry is also a way to connect with people beyond the boundaries of her professional responsibilities. It offers her an opportunity to reflect on human experiences and communicate ideas that matter to society.
This creative pursuit adds another dimension to her personality, bringing together the intellectual, spiritual and human aspects of her journey.
A Message to Women Who Aspire to Make a Difference
When asked what she would say to young women who wish to create an impact in society, Dr. Lal encourages them to recognise their strength and embrace their identity with pride.
“Let us celebrate womanhood in all its grace and power, and encourage every young woman to live with courage, not only for personal success but for the betterment of society as a whole.”
She believes that responsibilities such as marriage and motherhood should not be viewed as obstacles to achieving dreams. With the right mindset, balance and determination, women can continue to pursue their ambitions while remaining connected to their values and families.
Her advice is to dream boldly, work consistently and remember that every woman’s journey has the potential to inspire someone else.
She also emphasises the importance of women supporting one another and creating an environment where every individual has the opportunity to grow.
A Journey That Continues to Inspire
Dr. (Mrs.) Abhilasha J. Lal’s story brings together professional achievement, family life, spiritual faith and a commitment to public service.
From her international academic experience to her leadership responsibilities at SHUATS, her contributions to social service and her recognition as Mrs. India Inspirational Queen, her journey reflects a life shaped by purpose.
But perhaps the most meaningful part of her story is the belief that personal success and service to others can exist together.
As she continues to lead, teach, write and nurture her family, Dr. Lal remains committed to a simple principle: to live meaningfully, contribute sincerely and encourage others to believe in their own potential.
Her journey offers a reminder that a woman’s ambitions need not be limited to a single role. With faith, determination and a strong sense of purpose, she can continue to make a difference in her family, her profession and the society around her.
