Dr. Meenal Mategaonkar: A Voice Shaped by Sur and Sadhana

Dr. Meenal Mategaonkar’s journey in classical music began long before she stepped onto a professional stage. As a child, her teachers recognised her natural sense of sur and encouraged her parents to enrol her in formal music training. Their encouragement introduced her to a world that would remain an important part of her life, even as she pursued a career in engineering.

Her voice often felt restricted, and she underwent a prolonged course of treatment. The experience tested her musical practice, but it did not end her commitment to singing.

A further change came after childbirth, when her voice underwent a significant transformation. Regaining her original vocal quality took time and patience. She returned to music lectures and resumed regular riyaaz, working steadily to restore her voice. Gradually, her efforts began to bear fruit, and she was able to return to the musical expression she had worked so hard to regain.

For Dr. Meenal, the challenges of classical music extend beyond personal struggles. Gaining recognition in the field remains a demanding pursuit throughout a musician’s career. Her journey has required continued learning, consistent practice and a willingness to keep presenting her work to new audiences.

Her dedication has earned her several notable distinctions. She is a Top-Grade Artist of All India Radio and has received the Gaan-Naipunya Puraskar. She also secured first place nationally in an All India Radio competition, an achievement that reflects her standing as a classical vocalist.

Her professional journey has also been recognised for its dual focus. The Women Achievers’ Award acknowledged her ability to balance careers in engineering and music. She was featured in Loksatta alongside Asha Bhosle ji for managing these two professions, bringing attention to a career that spans both technical and artistic fields.

Beyond these honours, Dr. Meenal has performed at prestigious mahotsavs in Rishikesh, Varanasi, Ayodhya and other cultural centres. She has also been part of Sur-Sangat, a series of concerts held across the United States over the course of a month, taking her music to audiences beyond India.

For her, the purpose of continuing this journey is deeply connected to the teachers who first recognised her talent. She hopes to sustain her musical practice and share her music with larger audiences, honouring the guidance that set her on this path.
