From International Student to Inspiring Educator: Pavithra Srinivasan’s Journey

Some journeys are planned with certainty, while others unfold through unexpected turns, silent struggles, and moments of self-discovery. For Pavithra Srinivasan, the journey from a young dreamer in India to a respected private tutor in Sydney has been one shaped by courage, creativity, and an unwavering belief in learning.

From a very young age, Pavithra found comfort and meaning in words. Writing was never just a hobby for her; it was a way of understanding the world and expressing emotions that often remained unspoken. Her love for storytelling naturally inspired her to teach creative writing to students. What started as a simple effort to help children write stories gradually became a deeper journey of self-learning and purpose.

As she trained her students, she also trained herself. Every lesson she taught added a new chapter to her own growth. Unknown to her at the time, this quiet passion would later become the foundation of her identity in a foreign land.

At the age of seventeen, Pavithra moved to Sydney to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems. Like many Indian families, her parents believed Australia would provide a secure future and endless opportunities. Guided by the promises of a migration agency, they imagined a smooth and successful life abroad for their daughter.

On 23rd July 2017, Pavithra landed in Sydney carrying dreams, hope, and the expectations of her family. But reality soon looked very different from the picture she had been shown.

The struggles of international students were harsh and emotionally draining. Finding a part-time job was difficult, and sustaining one in environments lacking empathy and ethics became even harder. Slowly, she realised how many international students were treated merely as financial contributors rather than individuals with aspirations and emotions.

The experience left her heartbroken.

Yet, instead of allowing disappointment to consume her, Pavithra chose reflection over resentment. She remained calm and focused on understanding what her next step should be. During one of the most difficult phases of her life, when emotional support from family felt distant, she found peace and strength at the Venkateshwara Temple in Sydney.

Faith became her anchor.

Trusting the path ahead, Pavithra made a bold decision. She resigned from her job and stepped into something uncertain but deeply meaningful — private tutoring.

What began as an opportunity to help one student slowly transformed into a fulfilling career and a life-changing venture. The Indian-Australian community welcomed and supported her idea wholeheartedly. Their encouragement gave her confidence to continue building something of her own.

Today, Pavithra proudly works as a dedicated private tutor in Sydney, a role she describes as “fantasy fulfilled.” Through teaching, she discovered not only professional satisfaction but also emotional healing and purpose.

However, her path was not free from judgment.

As an Information Systems graduate choosing teaching over a conventional IT career, Pavithra often faced criticism and uncomfortable questions. People repeatedly asked why she did not pursue a full-time corporate role or why she chose private tutoring, which required constant travel and personal effort.

For a long time, those questions left her speechless.

Eventually, she learned to see them differently. She realised that most people only see outcomes, not the battles fought behind them. Her decision was never about societal expectations; it was about personal well-being, growth, and staying true to herself.

Pavithra believes that success is not defined by titles or achievements alone. For her, becoming a good human being matters more than becoming a celebrated professional. She wants to continue spreading knowledge, contributing to literature and the arts, and supporting people who carry a meaningful vision for a better world.

Despite everything she has achieved, humility remains at the center of her personality. She believes pride can slow down growth, while curiosity and learning keep a person alive with purpose.

“I don’t feel proud of my achievements,” she says softly. “But I would feel content if my work influences and motivates even one good soul on earth.”

And perhaps that is what truly makes Pavithra Srinivasan’s story inspiring — not just her ability to overcome challenges, but her determination to keep learning, teaching, and lighting the way for others along the journey.
