Priyanka Mehta: From Computer Science Professor to Co-Founder of ZIKKU, a Mother and Baby-Care Brand

For Priyanka Mehta, entrepreneurship began with a question she encountered in her own life as a mother. When she and her husband, Apoorav, welcomed their son, Abir, they started looking at mother and baby-care products from a parent's perspective. They wanted essentials that were safe, gentle, good in quality, practical, and affordable. Finding products that met these expectations with confidence, however, was not always easy.

That personal experience led to a simple but meaningful question: Why should parents have to struggle to find reliable essentials during such an important phase of life?

The answer gradually took shape in the form of ZIKKU.

A Personal Need That Became a Business Idea

Before entering the world of entrepreneurship, Priyanka had built a career in education and research. With a background in Computer Science, she worked as an Assistant Professor for several years, developing a strong foundation in analytical thinking, problem-solving, and continuous learning.

Motherhood added a different perspective to her professional experience. It helped her understand the everyday concerns of parents and the importance of products that offer both practicality and peace of mind.

In 2015, Priyanka and Apoorav co-founded Associated Health Care, which eventually evolved into ZIKKU. What began as an effort to address a need they understood personally gradually developed into a broader vision: making everyday parenting a little easier through thoughtfully designed mother and baby-care products.

Priyanka became actively involved in the business full-time in 2022. The transition brought together different parts of her life, including her experience as an educator, researcher, mother, and problem-solver.

For her, building a business was not simply about entering a new industry. It was about applying what she already knew while being willing to learn what she did not.

Leaving Academia to Build Something New

Moving from an established academic career into entrepreneurship was one of the most significant decisions Priyanka made. Teaching and research had been central to her professional identity, and the business world presented an entirely different set of responsibilities.

She had to learn about manufacturing, product development, customer expectations, marketing, and business operations. Unlike the structured environment of academia, entrepreneurship offered no fixed syllabus or guaranteed outcome.

Building ZIKKU while managing family responsibilities and motherhood added another layer of complexity. There were difficult decisions, mistakes, uncertain moments, and situations in which the results did not match expectations.

Establishing customer trust, understanding what parents genuinely needed, and responding to a changing market required patience and a willingness to keep learning.

Rather than treating every difficulty as a reason to stop, Priyanka focused on the purpose behind the business. The goal was to solve real problems for mothers and babies, and that purpose helped guide decisions when the way forward was not always clear.

Her academic background encouraged her to examine problems logically and look for practical solutions. Motherhood, meanwhile, helped her approach those problems with empathy and a better understanding of the people who would eventually use the products.

The support of Apoorav, her husband and co-founder, also remained important. Their shared vision provided a common direction as they worked through the uncertainties of building a business.

Over time, Priyanka came to understand that entrepreneurship does not require having every answer at the beginning. It requires the willingness to listen, learn from mistakes, make adjustments, and continue working towards a clear purpose.

Building ZIKKU with Parents in Mind

For Priyanka, ZIKKU is more than a commercial venture. It represents a response to a need she experienced herself and a continuing effort to make useful products available to parents.

Her approach centres on understanding everyday parenting challenges rather than expanding a product portfolio simply for the sake of growth. Safety, quality, affordability, and thoughtful design remain important considerations in the direction she wants the brand to take.

She believes that customer trust must be built through products that parents find genuinely useful and are comfortable choosing again. This makes listening to customers, understanding their expectations, and learning from their feedback important parts of the business.

The experience of moving from academia into entrepreneurship has also changed how she views professional growth. Her journey has shown her that skills developed in one field can become valuable in another, even when the transition requires learning an entirely new set of responsibilities.

Problem-solving, research, and a habit of continuous learning gave her a foundation. Her experience as a mother helped her connect that foundation with a real consumer need.

Together, these experiences continue to inform the way she approaches her role as Co-Founder and Director of ZIKKU India Pvt. Ltd.

Looking Ahead: Growing with Purpose

Priyanka's vision for ZIKKU is to develop it into a trusted and accessible Indian mother and baby-care brand. Her plans focus on improving products, strengthening customer relationships, and building the business sustainably.

She wants to continue developing practical solutions that address the real concerns of mothers and babies while maintaining attention to safety, quality, affordability, and thoughtful design.

Expanding the brand's presence across India is another priority. Through its own online platform, established marketplaces, parenting communities, and relevant digital content, she hopes to build stronger connections with Indian parents.

For Priyanka, growth is not just about reaching more customers. It is also about building a relationship with them and earning their confidence over time.

Her personal ambitions extend beyond the business. She hopes her experience will encourage more women, particularly mothers, to explore their own ideas and consider entrepreneurship without waiting for the perfect circumstances.

Her journey offers a practical lesson: a professional transition does not always require leaving past experience behind. Sometimes, the knowledge gained in one career becomes the starting point for something entirely different.

From teaching Computer Science to building a brand shaped by her experience of motherhood, Priyanka Mehta has brought together education, problem-solving, and entrepreneurship in a venture with a clear purpose.

As ZIKKU continues to grow, her focus remains on building patiently and responsibly, one product, one customer, and one learning experience at a time.
