Samta Chhabra: How Every Setback Became a Leadership Decision

Sometimes, a single rejection changes the direction of an entire life. For Samta Chhabra, that moment came just as she was about to fulfil a childhood dream. She had secured admission to study Aeronautical Engineering, ranked among the top 100 students, and looked forward to building a career in India's defence sector. Yet, despite completing every possible formality and approaching multiple banks, she was unable to secure an education loan because she could not provide the required admission receipt. The opportunity slipped away before her journey could begin.

 The setback was difficult to accept. It affected her confidence, her health, and the future she had carefully planned. For the first time, she found herself questioning whether years of hard work had been enough.

She couldn't change what had happened, but she could decide what came next. Rather than dwelling on the opportunity she had lost, she chose to build a new path—one that would eventually lead her somewhere she had never imagined.

With that decision, she enrolled at NIIT to study Computer Applications while simultaneously completing her B.Sc. in Information Technology. Balancing education, professional training, and financial responsibilities wasn't easy, but she refused to let one setback define the rest of her journey.

To support herself, she began working while continuing her studies. Those early technical and administrative roles became a training ground where Samta developed strong communication, client management, business etiquette, and problem-solving skills.

More importantly, those early years exposed another challenge she needed to overcome—herself.

Early in her career, Samta lacked confidence. She often hesitated to approach experienced professionals, believing she wasn't knowledgeable enough to contribute. Instead of accepting those doubts as part of her personality, she treated confidence as a skill that could be developed.

She deliberately placed herself in unfamiliar situations, accepted responsibilities beyond her comfort zone, travelled independently, expanded her professional network, and committed herself to continuous learning. Each experience strengthened not only her capabilities but also her belief in them.

Years later, relationship-building, stakeholder management, and strategic partnerships would become some of her greatest professional strengths. Perhaps because she once struggled with self-doubt herself, Samta learned never to judge people by first impressions. She believes everyone has something to teach, whether it's a client, a vendor, or a junior team member. That respect for people and relationships continues to shape the way she leads today.

As her confidence grew, so did her understanding of what she truly wanted from her career. While her early roles had given her valuable professional experience, she realised she was looking for something more than stability. She wanted creativity, meaningful challenges, and the opportunity to create experiences that people would remember. For Samta, the greatest satisfaction has never been completing an event—it has always been watching months of planning come together to create an experience that leaves clients smiling long after the event is over.

That realisation led her to make another defining decision. She stepped into artist management, opening the doors to the fast-paced world of marketing and events. What began as a career shift soon became the turning point that transformed her professional identity. For the first time, she found herself in an environment where no two days were the same. The fast pace suited her personality. She enjoyed solving problems others thought were impossible, finding practical solutions under pressure, and adapting when plans changed unexpectedly. Those who work with her often describe her as dependable, energetic, and an instinctive problem solver. She laughs when people call her "jugaadu," but quietly accepts it as a compliment. For her, every challenge has a solution—sometimes it simply requires looking at it differently.

She realized that events were never just about logistics or timelines. Behind every successful event was the responsibility of translating a client's vision into an experience that achieved real business outcomes. That perspective fundamentally changed the way she approached her work.

Over the years, Samta expanded her expertise across brand marketing, experiential campaigns, corporate events, global conferences, strategic partnerships, ATL, BTL, MICE, and artist management. By mastering every stage of event execution—from strategy to on-ground delivery—she discovered that lasting success isn't measured by the scale of an event, but by the trust it builds and the relationships it leaves behind.

Her journey, however, was far from linear.

One of the most difficult decisions of her career came when she walked away from a financially secure corporate role because it no longer aligned with the kind of professional she wanted to become. Stability offered comfort, but it couldn't replace purpose. Choosing uncertainty meant starting over without any guarantee that the risk would pay off.

There were days when financial uncertainty became painfully real. She still remembers buying milk with the last few coins she had. There were moments when she questioned whether she had made the right decision, but every time she considered returning simply for security, she reminded herself why she had left in the first place—to build a career driven by purpose rather than comfort. Looking back, she has never claimed those decisions were easy—only that standing still felt harder.

Instead of rushing into the next opportunity, Samta invested that phase in understanding herself better. She explored industries, identified her strengths, continued learning, and became intentional about the direction she wanted her career to take. Rather than treating uncertainty as lost time, she turned it into a period of preparation.

A move to Dubai, which she had hoped would accelerate her career, didn't unfold as expected. Returning to India wasn't easy, and the financial losses from her own venture made starting over even harder. Accepting a significantly lower salary after years of experience required setting aside pride—but rebuilding with humility became one of the most valuable lessons of her career.

Instead of asking why things had gone wrong, she focused on what she could learn, improve, and do differently. That mindset not only strengthened her resilience but also sharpened her decision-making, adaptability, and ability to lead through uncertainty—qualities that would later define her leadership in the events and marketing industry.

As Samta continued to grow in the events and marketing industry, she made a conscious decision that would become one of the defining principles of her leadership—never ask others to manage a responsibility she wasn't willing to understand herself.

Rather than limiting herself to planning and coordination, she immersed herself in every stage of event execution—from strategy and vendor management to logistics and on-ground delivery—believing true leadership comes from understanding every moving part of the experience.

That philosophy became especially important in an industry where on-ground event operations have traditionally been dominated by men. Managing overnight installations, logistics, vendors, and on-ground execution was often seen as a man's job.

Samta never saw them that way.

Instead of accepting those assumptions, Samta focused on learning every part of the work herself. She believed that capability is proven through hard work, preparation, and taking ownership—not by gender.

Over the years, that mindset became one of her greatest professional strengths. Whether managing multiple stakeholders, resolving last-minute operational challenges, or ensuring seamless delivery under demanding timelines, she developed a reputation for approaching complexity with clarity and composure.

One of the defining turning points in Samta's career came during a strategy presentation for Justdial. As part of the agency team, she presented a campaign strategy, demonstrating not only creative thinking but also a strong understanding of the client's business objectives. By the end of the meeting, the discussion took an unexpected turn—the client offered her a role as Promotional Manager at Justdial.

For Samta, the offer was more than a career opportunity. It was a moment of validation. After years of presenting ideas from one side of the table, she was being invited to sit on the other—not just to execute campaigns, but to shape them.

Ironically, despite years of experience, Samta still feels nervous before important presentations. But she no longer sees those nerves as a weakness. To her, they are a reminder that she continues to care deeply about every opportunity entrusted to her and never wants to take that trust for granted.

One of the most memorable milestones in Samta's career was being part of the planning and strategy team for a Mahindra & Mahindra supplier event in Poland—her first international event. Seeing months of planning come together through flawless execution on a global stage was both professionally rewarding and personally fulfilling. The successful delivery earned appreciation from senior client leadership and reinforced her confidence in leading complex, large-scale projects beyond borders.

People usually see the final event, but not the months of planning, coordination, and problem-solving behind it. For Samta, a successful event isn't just about flawless execution—it's about earning the trust of clients through consistent delivery.

As her experience grew, so did the scale of the projects she led—from experiential marketing campaigns to global conferences and strategic partnerships. The setbacks that once tested her had quietly shaped a leader who thrives under pressure and earns trust through consistent execution.

Samta's journey has been recognised through several prestigious honours, each reflecting years of dedication, perseverance, and excellence behind the scenes. Receiving the Queen Behind the Stage recognition at the Power Women Awards celebrated the countless hours of commitment invested in delivering exceptional events that often unfold effortlessly for the audience but demand months of meticulous planning and execution behind the curtain.

Her contribution to the industry was further acknowledged when the SheSplash community recognised her as one of the Women to Watch 2026 under the category of Operational Excellence & Brand Impact. The recognition celebrated her ability to deliver impactful marketing initiatives

Today, Samta is part of Grazitti Interactive, where she has grown from executing events to shaping strategic initiatives. From leading signature marketing events to now strengthening partnerships and business relationships, her role continues to evolve with every new responsibility. For her, the greatest achievement isn't a designation or a title—it's the trust she has earned from her leadership to take ownership of increasingly important initiatives.

Yet, among all the milestones she has achieved, one accomplishment remains deeply personal to her—winning the trust and pride of her parents.

Coming from a conservative middle-class family, choosing an unconventional career was never easy. Watching her parents gradually believe in her choices and celebrate her achievements has become one of life's most meaningful rewards. Their trust wasn't earned through a single achievement, but through years of quietly proving that every difficult decision had a purpose.

That journey of growth extended far beyond her career. Beyond work, Samta enjoys travelling solo, embracing every journey as an opportunity to learn from new people, cultures, and perspectives. An observant listener by nature, she believes every interaction has something to teach—a mindset that continues to shape both her leadership and the relationships she builds.

Today, Samta's aspirations extend far beyond personal success. Having rebuilt her own career more than once, she hopes to become a business leader who creates opportunities for others, mentors young professionals, and builds platforms where creativity and talent can flourish. Whenever she meets someone struggling with self-doubt, she sees a reflection of the person she once was. If her journey helps someone believe in themselves a little sooner, she considers that a success beyond any award.

Looking back, Samta no longer sees the loss of her aeronautical dream as the moment life took something away from her. She sees it as the beginning of a journey that taught her to adapt, rebuild, and keep moving forward, even when the path changed unexpectedly.
