Shikha Agarwal: Inspiring Women Through Saree Draping and Self Makeup

From the quiet lanes of a small town in Uttar Pradesh to becoming a recognized saree draping mentor with a thriving online community, Shikha Agarwal’s journey is a story of courage, self-discovery, and passion rediscovered later in life. Her life did not begin with glamour, cameras, or social media fame. Instead, it started with simple summer afternoons spent learning stitching, sewing, pottery, and other forms of art that slowly planted the seeds of creativity in her heart.

After marriage, like many women, Shikha devoted herself entirely to her family and children. Years passed in fulfilling responsibilities, caring for loved ones, and building a home. But as her children grew older and became busy with their own lives, she found herself standing at a crossroads. A silence entered her routine, bringing with it a feeling of emptiness she could no longer ignore. Rather than letting that loneliness define her, she chose to rediscover herself.

That rediscovery led her back to art.

Shikha first stepped into the world of makeup artistry, seeing it not merely as beauty enhancement but as a creative expression. Soon, she realized that saree draping beautifully complemented makeup artistry while also carrying the richness of Indian culture. What started as curiosity slowly transformed into purpose. For the first time in years, she decided to live for herself and follow the passion she had quietly carried within her since childhood.

But beginning a career in her mid-thirties was far from easy.

Confidence became her first and biggest challenge. Having spent most of her life within the comfort of her home, first as a daughter and then as a homemaker, stepping into the professional world felt intimidating. She often questioned herself and wondered whether she truly belonged there.

Then came the language barrier. Coming from a Hindi-speaking background, Shikha found herself struggling when she moved to Mumbai for professional training. Surrounded by fluent English speakers who carried themselves with ease and confidence, she initially felt out of place. Conversations became difficult, and self-doubt grew stronger.

Age, too, became another obstacle. While many people settle into established careers by their thirties, Shikha was just beginning hers. She trained alongside much younger students who adapted quickly to trends and technology. At times, she felt left behind. Yet, instead of giving up, she chose consistency over fear. She worked hard every day, stayed focused, and slowly transformed her insecurities into strengths. Her dedication eventually made her one of the best performers in her class.

Armed with certification and newly gained confidence, Shikha believed success would come easily. Reality, however, had different plans. The beauty and fashion industry was highly competitive, and finding the right audience was difficult. Around the same time, Instagram was rapidly becoming a powerful platform, especially during the COVID period. But technology was completely unfamiliar territory for her. She did not even know how to click a proper selfie.

Still, she decided to take a chance.

Her first reel unexpectedly received nearly 15 to 17 thousand views. That moment changed everything. For the first time, she realized that people connected with her work. Encouraged by the response, she started creating more content focused on saree draping and self makeup.

Then came a message that altered her entire direction.

A woman reached out wanting to learn how to drape a saree independently. That simple request opened Shikha’s eyes to a larger reality. She understood that countless women wanted to learn these skills but lacked proper guidance and confidence. Instead of focusing only on clients, she shifted her energy toward teaching.

The journey of becoming an online educator brought its own struggles. Learning technology, understanding social media, and connecting with people across different cultures and languages demanded continuous effort. Yet, with patience and determination, she adapted and evolved.

Today, Shikha Agarwal has taught more than 1,000 women the art of self makeup and saree draping. More importantly, she has built a strong and inspiring community of over 112K followers on Instagram, becoming a known name in the field of self saree draping education. What gives her the greatest satisfaction is not simply styling others, but empowering women to become confident and independent themselves.

Her mission now goes beyond fashion and beauty. Through her work, Shikha aims to preserve the elegance of Indian culture while helping women of every age rediscover themselves. From young girls to women in their sixties, she encourages everyone to take time for their own dreams and happiness.

Her achievements stand as proof of her remarkable transformation. Despite starting with no knowledge of technology, she successfully built a thriving digital presence. Despite her initial lack of confidence, she became a mentor to more than a thousand women. Starting from a small town, she established herself as a respected self saree draping teacher and inspired many others to believe that age is never a limitation when it comes to starting anew.

Her dedication has also earned her several recognitions, including the AIWAA Awards 2022, SheAsia 2022, HerStory Times 2023, and recognition from the Indian Women’s History Museum (IWHM).

Shikha Agarwal’s story is not simply about makeup or saree draping. It is about rediscovering identity after years of putting oneself last. It is about stepping beyond fear, learning from scratch, and proving that passion has no age limit. Most importantly, it is about inspiring women to finally choose themselves without guilt and live with confidence, grace, and purpose.
