Aman Sharma: From a Singer's Dream to Television Stardom

Amar Sharma never planned to become an actor. His heart belonged to music, his dreams were tuned to melodies, and he imagined a future behind the microphone rather than in front of the camera. Yet life had a different script waiting for him—one that would transform a young man from Rajasthan into a familiar face on Indian television.

Born in Bikaner, Rajasthan, and raised across different cities because of his father's transferable government job, Amar spent much of his childhood in Delhi. While academics remained important, his real passion was music. Coming from a family where art was respected—his mother being a classical music teacher—he immersed himself in classical vocal training and completed Gandharva examinations. Singing was not merely a hobby; it was the dream he carried into adulthood.

After graduation, Amar pursued a Post Graduate Diploma in Hotel and Tourism Management, followed by an MBA in Finance from Jaipur. Like many young dreamers, he chose the safer path of education while quietly nurturing bigger ambitions. But eventually, the pull of his dream became impossible to ignore. With hopes of becoming a playback singer, he packed his bags and headed to Mumbai.

The city of dreams welcomed him with reality.

When Amar arrived in Mumbai in 2007, he had no contacts, no industry connections, and no roadmap. His only companions were determination and a small amount of savings from his job. He initially hoped to stay at a Gurudwara in Dadar, but when accommodation wasn't available, he found himself searching for alternatives. Eventually, he moved into a modest lodge where dozens of people slept in a large hall, each paying just fifty rupees a day for a bed.

For many, those days would have felt like struggle. Amar prefers to call them lessons.

Those experiences taught him the value of money, patience, and perseverance. There were days when opportunities seemed distant and auditions felt uncertain. Yet every challenge strengthened his resolve.

Ironically, the dream that brought him to Mumbai wasn't the dream that changed his life.

While trying to establish himself as a singer, friends encouraged him to consider acting. After all, theatre had always been a part of his life. During school, he had actively participated in plays and cultural programs. Acting wasn't unfamiliar—it simply wasn't the destination he had imagined.

Taking their advice, Amar joined Nadira Babbar's renowned theatre group, Ekjute, in 2008. What followed became one of the most important chapters of his artistic journey. For nearly one and a half years, he trained in theatre alongside talented classmates, including future stars like Sushant Singh Rajput and Richa Chadha.

The stage became his classroom.

After completing workshops and theatre training, opportunities slowly began to appear. Small roles and cameos came his way, including projects with Balaji Telefilms and shows on 9X. Then came a role that would alter the course of his career forever.

When the makers of Balika Vadhu approached him for a cameo role, Amar initially declined. He was already involved in other projects and didn't see much potential in a short appearance. But after repeated requests from the production team, he finally agreed.

That decision became a turning point.

Cast as Madan Singh, an orthodox and deeply traditional Rajasthani character, Amar decided to bring authenticity to the role. Drawing from his roots, he infused the character with Marwari nuances, dialect, and cultural mannerisms. What was originally intended to last just a few episodes began resonating strongly with audiences.

The cameo that was supposed to end in a week stayed alive for eight years.

As viewers connected with Madan Singh, Amar found himself working alongside some of television's most respected actors. The experience became a masterclass in acting. Every scene offered a new lesson, every interaction a chance to grow.

One of the most remarkable aspects of his journey is how he transformed expectations. While many actors chase lead roles, Amar discovered that there is no such thing as small work. His eight-year journey with Balika Vadhu taught him that commitment and sincerity matter far more than screen time.

"If someone is watching you," he often believes, "give your hundred percent, no matter how small the role may seem."

Recognition came relatively early. Within a year and a half of entering the acting industry, people began recognizing him. Auditions became easier, industry professionals started calling him directly, and doors that once seemed impossible to open gradually opened on their own.

But fame never changed him.

Those who meet Amar today often say they are surprised by how friendly and grounded he is. Many assume that the intense, often negative characters he portrays on screen reflect his real personality. The reality couldn't be more different. Behind the stern expressions and powerful performances is someone who values relationships, learning, and humility.

Over the years, Amar continued building a diverse body of work. From Balika Vadhu to Keshav Pandit, Palakon Ki Chhaon Mein, and Rimjhim, each role added a new layer to his craft. Some challenged him emotionally, while others allowed him to reconnect with his Rajasthani roots.

Looking back, Amar believes his greatest achievement isn't fame or success—it's maturity.

The entertainment industry exposed him to countless personalities, situations, and experiences. It taught him how to navigate people, remain patient during uncertainty, and maintain balance during both success and setbacks.

Whenever difficult times arrive, he reminds himself of the beautiful years the industry has given him. Instead of worrying about what isn't happening, he focuses on gratitude for everything that has happened.

For aspiring actors, his advice is clear: preparation matters more than appearance. Talent, training, and a strong foundation create confidence that looks alone never can. Whether it's acting, singing, or any other profession, specialization and dedication remain essential.

He also emphasizes the importance of surrounding yourself with positive people. According to him, the company you keep can determine how you respond to challenges and whether you continue moving forward when things become difficult.

Today, after nearly two decades in the entertainment industry, Amar Sharma still feels there is much more to achieve. He dreams of portraying a truly unique and unconventional character—one that challenges him in new ways and allows audiences to see another side of his talent.

His journey began with music, found its direction through theatre, and flourished through acting. It is a story of unexpected turns, unwavering patience, and the courage to adapt when life presents a different opportunity than the one you originally imagined.

And perhaps that is the greatest lesson from Amar Sharma's story: sometimes the dream you chase leads you to something even greater than the dream itself.
