Nikhleesh Rathore: From State-Level Wrestler to Rising Television Star

Nikhleesh Rathore never imagined that a restless thought after finishing his 12th standard would one day lead him from the wrestling mats of Rajasthan to the sets of India's most beloved mythological dramas, television shows and web series.

Sometimes, a journey begins with a feeling that refuses to go away. For Nikhleesh, it was the sense that something bigger awaited him. Growing up in Bhilwara, Rajasthan, he was never someone who limited himself to one passion. He loved poetry, storytelling, books, and stage performances. Long before cameras entered his life, he was already creating worlds of his own.

At just fifteen, he wrote and directed his first comedy play for his school's annual function. While his classmates focused on performing, Nikhleesh was busy acting, directing, and imagining how stories could come alive on stage. Looking back, those early school productions quietly planted the seeds of the artist he would eventually become.

Yet his first love was sports. A talented wrestler during his school years, he became a state-level champion before stepping into the world of fitness. His dedication led him to work as a fitness trainer, and in 2014 he entered the prestigious Mr. India modeling competition, where he secured the position of second runner-up. It was a significant achievement, but an even bigger turning point came from an unexpected source—his father.

One day, his father looked at him and said something that would change everything: "Go to Mumbai and give your dreams a chance."

With those words, Nikhleesh packed his ambitions and headed to the city where countless dreams are tested every day.

Mumbai welcomed him with challenges rather than opportunities. Living away from family, managing survival on his own, adjusting to a completely different lifestyle, and navigating an unfamiliar city became daily struggles. Beyond the practical difficulties, there was another challenge—learning whom to trust.

The entertainment industry can be overwhelming for newcomers. Promises were made, hopes were raised, and disappointments often followed. There were moments when he questioned whether he should continue. But every time doubt appeared, his passion for acting pushed him forward.

Determined to sharpen his craft, he immersed himself in theatre. For nearly five years, he worked extensively with ABS Theatre Group, performing in numerous stage productions. Those years became his real acting school. Every rehearsal, every performance, and every critique helped him grow into a more confident performer.

When he finally stepped into the world of auditions, the challenges continued. Rejections were frequent, opportunities were scarce, and success seemed distant. Yet he kept showing up, convinced that persistence would eventually open the right doors.

That patience began paying off when he landed Zee TV's Apna Time Bhi Aayega. The show became a gateway to bigger opportunities, including Mithai and later Ramayan, which proved to be a defining chapter in his career. The success of Ramayan gave him the confidence that he was finally moving in the right direction.

Soon after, new projects followed, including the Netflix series Chumbak and several other productions that expanded his presence as an actor.

Among all the characters he has portrayed, Bharat from Ramayan remains the most transformative. The role went far beyond performance—it changed him as a person.

Playing Bharat required him to understand extraordinary patience, sacrifice, and devotion. As he spent time exploring the character's emotions, he noticed those qualities gradually influencing his own life. Once known for his aggressive reactions, Nikhleesh found himself becoming calmer and more thoughtful.

Bharat's unwavering patience during Lord Ram's exile taught him an invaluable lesson: not everything happens according to our plans, but everything arrives at the right time.

The industry's uncertainties tested that belief repeatedly. During the 2019 lockdown, when productions came to a halt and uncertainty surrounded the future of entertainment, he briefly wondered whether he should pursue a different path. Yet the actor within him refused to give up. When the world reopened, he returned with renewed determination.

Over the years, he also learned to manage creative differences. While he has shared great relationships with co-actors, occasional differences with directors challenged him to balance his artistic instincts with professional discipline. Rather than arguing, he chose to adapt and become what he calls a "director's actor."

At the same time, he values directors who encourage creative freedom. During his recent Colors show Sughan, he was allowed to improvise and shape his character organically. The collaborative environment helped him deliver some of his most satisfying work.

When the camera rolls and the director calls "action," Nikhleesh enters a space that he considers sacred. For him, the moments between "action" and "cut" are the result of years of dedication, theatre training, and relentless preparation.

He arrives on set carrying not only his lines but also the character's emotions, backstory, and motivations. Whether portraying Bharat's grief, anger, or devotion, he believes an actor's responsibility is to honor every emotion truthfully.

Behind the success, however, sacrifices remain. Long working hours often leave little time for family. He cherishes the brief moments he spends with his wife and their two dogs before and after work. There have been painful occasions when he missed family weddings, important gatherings, and even moments when loved ones needed him most.

One memory still stays with him—the time his father met with an accident and he couldn't immediately be there. In moments like those, he has questioned the cost of chasing dreams. Yet those same dreams continue to be supported by the people who matter most.

His greatest pillars of strength have always been his mother and his wife, who have stood beside him through every uncertainty, struggle, and achievement.

Throughout his journey, one principle has remained constant: honesty.

Nikhleesh believes that honesty in both work and life creates its own path to success. Talent may open doors, but sincerity keeps them open.

Today, his definition of success differs from conventional standards. For him, success is not measured by houses, cars, or financial milestones. Instead, it is measured by happiness—the ability to find fulfillment in one's choices, work, relationships, and everyday experiences.

Material desires, he believes, never truly end. Happiness, however, can be found in appreciating what one already has.

Looking ahead, Nikhleesh dreams of being part of meaningful projects that leave a lasting impact. He admires stories that connect deeply with audiences, create conversations, and inspire change. Whether through compelling web series, motivational narratives, or emotionally rich dramas, he hopes to continue choosing work that matters.

The motivation that drives him every morning remains simple yet powerful—the artist within him. The curiosity to explore new characters, tell new stories, and challenge himself creatively continues to fuel his journey.

From a young boy directing school plays in Bhilwara to an actor finding his place in India's entertainment industry, Nikhleesh Rathore's story is a reminder that dreams rarely follow a straight path. They demand patience, persistence, sacrifice, and faith.
