Sanikaa Amit: From a Shy Schoolgirl to a Rising Star in Indian Television
Sanikaa Amit never imagined that a shy, introverted schoolgirl who tried hard not to be noticed would one day find her voice in front of the camera. There was no family background in acting, no early push toward glamour or performance. In fact, if someone had met her during school, they would have probably seen only the quiet girl sitting in the corner, staying away from attention. She was bullied, made to feel small, and often kept to herself. But beneath that silence was a curious mind that was always observing, always learning.
Her first real spark of confidence came in Grade 11. Sanikaa had always loved reading about unusual facts and interesting ideas, and one day she came across something that fascinated her—male seahorses can get pregnant. When she shared this with a friend, she was encouraged to take part in a stage competition based on a unique topic. Sanikaa refused at first. She was not a speaker, she said. She was not the kind of girl who stood on stage. Stage fright and introversion held her back.
Still, her friend convinced her to try.
That one decision changed everything.
Sanikaa stepped onto the stage for the first time and discovered something unexpected: people were listening. She won third prize in the competition, and the reward was a scientific magazine subscription for six months. But the real prize was far greater. For the first time, she felt that perhaps she could do more than quietly listen. Perhaps she could speak. That moment planted the seed of confidence that would later shape her life.
After school, Sanikaa pursued a pharmaceutical degree and planned to continue her studies. But the lockdown changed everything. Confined at home, she realised she could no longer stay still. Creativity had always lived inside her—through painting, imagination, and expression—but now she wanted to give it form. She began creating content on YouTube, scripting, shooting, and editing her own videos on a Samsung phone. With guidance from a friend, she learned the basics of editing and spent nights working on her content before posting it online. Around the same time, she also began making Instagram reels, as the platform was just beginning to rise.
What started as a creative outlet soon turned into a deeper calling.
During the lockdown, Sanikaa also felt a strong urge to earn. Though she was still in her final year of graduation, she began reaching out to people through mutual contacts. That search led her to an opening at Radio Mirchi. She decided to try, even though she had no idea where the experience would lead. Her first interview left her in tears. She walked out convinced she had failed and did not even tell her family what she had done. But to her surprise, she was called for a second interview.
That was when everything shifted.
When she asked why they had invited her back after her emotional first round, the response stayed with her forever. The team said they had seen something valuable in her vulnerability, in the way she expressed emotions, and in the honesty of her voice. For radio, they explained, those qualities matter deeply because the voice becomes the face. Sanikaa had not entered the medium with confidence. She entered with sincerity—and that became her strength.
Yet acting had always lived quietly in her heart long before radio ever came along.
As a child, Sanikaa would watch films and television with a private sense of longing. She admired actresses like Sonali Bendre and Madhuri Dixit, and deep down, she wanted to be like them someday. She even used to lock herself in her room and recreate ad-style performances in front of the mirror, just for herself. What seemed like innocent childhood imitation was actually the beginning of a dream she had never spoken aloud.
Sanikaa did not chase acting directly. She kept showing up for opportunities, and gradually television found her. Before that, she had already gained some experience through theatre and monologues during her college and pharmacy days. Each small step gave her a little more certainty, but she never thought of acting as a formal career path until the opportunities kept arriving.
The early days were not easy.
Her first show brought her into a world of experienced actors and an industry that moved fast. She cried in her makeup room, reminding herself that it was okay to be new, okay to be imperfect, okay to learn. Those difficult days tested her, but they also built her. Over time, senior actors on set noticed her growth and told her they had seen how far she had come. For Sanikaa, that became one of the most meaningful compliments she could receive. She could see the difference herself too—between her first episode and her latest work. She had grown not only as a performer, but as a person willing to improve with every step.
One of the most important decisions in her journey was choosing to say yes to television. That choice was shaped by the support of her father and one of her closest friends. At first, she was unsure and hesitant, caught between fear and possibility. But her father encouraged her to show up for the opportunities in front of her. For someone who had once been ruled by shyness, that support made all the difference.
Her biggest competition, she says, was never another person. It was her own shy version.
When her first major acting role came through her content, it felt like another turning point. The team reached out after seeing her work and invited her to audition. She went ahead, motivated and pushed by those around her to take the leap. The role itself became deeply memorable, not just because it marked a professional milestone, but because it allowed her to explore her range as an actor.
She played Lakshmi, but the journey was far more than one character. Through the role, Sanikaa got to experiment with different shades and personalities—playing a South Indian girl named Radha with a playful catchphrase, then a Rajasthani character, and later even an NRI role. She found joy in all of it. Her own bubbly nature came alive in the process, and some of her improvised lines were so well received that the writers even kept them in the script. In that space, she discovered not just performance, but presence.
The journey also taught her how the industry truly works. She had entered without anyone to guide her, without a family member or mentor inside the profession. So every lesson came from experience itself. Every scene, every shift, every challenge added to her understanding of acting as a craft and as a career.
For Sanikaa, confidence is not something that arrives before action. It is something that grows through action. She believes that even when fear is present, one must still step forward. That has been her way all along—showing up even when unsure, trying even when nervous, learning even when uncomfortable.
Balancing work and personal life, however, remains one of her ongoing lessons. Television, especially daily soaps, demands long hours and deep commitment. Shooting for 13 hours a day means the set often becomes a second home and the team becomes family. That intensity can make personal balance difficult, and Sanikaa admits she is still learning how to manage it. But she also believes in presence—being fully there wherever she is, whether with family or on set.
Looking ahead, Sanikaa dreams of exploring more mediums. Web shows, films, and many more creative avenues are on her mind. She sees herself growing in the field, but she also carries a strong sense of social responsibility. Her family values have always been rooted in helping others, especially through the work of her youngest uncle, who has spent years supporting adivasi communities near her hometown by helping with water access, handpumps, and washrooms. His social work left a deep impression on her.
That same spirit guided one of her most meaningful gestures: she donated her very first radio salary to that cause. While many might spend their first income on gifts for their parents, Sanikaa chose to give it away where it was needed most. For her, success is not just personal progress. It is also about service.
Through every phase of her journey—from the shy child in the corner to the voice on radio, from the uncertain beginner to the actor growing in confidence—Sanikaa Amit has moved forward with quiet determination. Her story is not about overnight transformation. It is about courage built step by step, voice found line by line, and a dream shaped by sincerity, hard work, and heart.
And through it all, her father remains her biggest supporter.
